EX: Pennsylvania,Pittsburgh Hello hockey fans. Another exciting season in the NWFHL is upon us and nobody is more excited than the fans of the game. There are alot of teams wondering how Edmonton floundered in the playoffs, how Minnesota stole the cup away from Montreal. Surprise teams surfaced last season, like Pittsburgh and rookie sensation Mario Lemieux, Chicago advancing against Toronto in the playoffs and Vancouver who backed their way into the playoffs. There were some surprises that were nothing short of mind boggling. Minnesota was a good team, however beating Edmonton in the conference finals? Chicago , which wasn't as deep as they are now, upset Toronto, and Pittsburgh upsetting Washington in six. Some teams improved drastically through the draft, one comes to mind
was Boston, which got Frederick Olausson, a crafty offensive defenseman.
Joe Nieuwendyk, a goal scoring centerman which should be the top center
by years end. Chicago is another team that improved during the offseason, however their road was a bit different. They have no talented prospects to think of, however they do have some talented players that can make them win now. Michel Goulet was the prize of the trade market this offseason, being the most talented young left winger in the game. Question of the season will be , will he play with Federko, or will they play on different lines to create some offensive chances everywhere. Teams that will be expecting alot out of their offseason aquisitions, if not through free agency then through offseason trading will be St. Louis and Vancouver. Fans in Vancouver welcome the arrival of Billy Smith via a trade with Pittsburgh. Billy Smith is being hailed as the savior, which may lead to a bad relationship through failure. Vancouver has a balanced attack on offense, but on defense, they aren't as deep. As a matter of fact, they have no defenseman worthy of number one status. A long season is expected for Billy Smith though. St. Louis is in far better position than Vancouver. Brian Propp, Ray Bourque, Keith Crowder, Mark Messier, Dale Hunter, Steve Smith and Keith Brown are all new players on the squad from the trading deadline and in the offseason. This team is stacked for a run maybe at the cup? Rich Hanson has done a great job with this team. Pre-season will be a time to start checking line combinations and such. Pittsburgh is a team thats on the rise, as they had one of the most exciting rookies last year. Trading for Billy Smith earlier in the offseason and then moving him to Vancouver proved to be a good move as they got more depth, and stronger on the farm club. Barry Pederson led the team last year in pts with sixty three, and should build upon that and is a team that is stacked at center, look for some moves to be made to improve depth in other positions, such as the backup goaltender, left wing, and maybe even depth on the blue line. The storyline for the season will be : Will Edmonton win this season ? Will they go under again this season? Will St Louis do as good as the expectations that are building under the arch? Will teams like Boston and Los Angeles be able to develop their young guns into their starting lineups this season? Will the offseason moves made by all the clubs be viewed as a good addition or a waste of money ? Time is the only thing thats standing in the way of finding out.
